The time is coming, if not already here, for professional bodies and academic institutions with worldwide operations to consider the impact of globalisation and advances in telecommunications on how they conduct their exams.

The good standing of a qualification depends on, among other things, the integrity of the assessment system that underpins it. How have global professional bodies that rely on written exams held at different locations around the world responded to advances in IT and the existence of geographical time zones? How does an internationally offered exam retain its integrity if the times of the sittings differ? Can we be confident that students will uphold ethical standards and that their exam performance will be credible if some are sitting papers several hours after their fellow candidates?

Perhaps these examining bodies should set time-zone-specific exams. Or maybe they need to consider conducting simultaneous sittings. This would mean that some students would be obliged to take their exams in the middle of the night. That surely wouldn't be too problematic, given that many...
