CIMA's worldwide community can come together and work as one to help the tsunami victims.

While people talk in trite terms about the concept of a global village or how small the world has really become, no one could have predicted how the recent South-East Asian tsunami would demonstrate so literally how closely linked whole regions are physically, geographically and economically.

Many commentators, better qualified than I am, have reported on the plight of the people directly affected by the disaster. They have made observations about its effect on the attitudes and behaviour of individuals, organisations and governments around the world. It's undeniable that this sense of global linkage is felt by CIMA as a body of 150,000 members and students in 156 countries. More than 10,000 are based in Sri Lanka. CIMA members, students and staff will be encouraged to channel their contributions to rebuilding schools in the country as soon as suitable projects have been identified (see page 4).

Many of our members are donating their expertise for benevolent purposes. The charity Management Accounting for Non-Governmental Organisations (Mango) is recruiting professional accountants to work in the affected areas and set up finance systems to manage the large volume of aid for the agencies involved there. The importance of our skills in providing the financial planning, strategy and control needed to maximise the effectiveness of available resources--charitable donations in this case--is so starkly illustrated at a time like this.

Every five years we ask our members and students what they like and don't like about their magazine. We also ask for any improvements they would like to see. I am pleased to report that there was resounding praise for the content and also some positive suggestions, which we have taken on board in this first issue of our relaunched...
