A word from the president: 'CGMA designation holders are already guiding 91 of the Fortune 100'.

In the run-up to the World Conference of Accountants, Warren Allen, IFAC's president, has issued a three-pronged message to his fellow professionals. First, he requests that we become more active in tackling the financial crisis. Second, he asks us to help promote the value of our profession. Third, he underlines the public's reliance on accountants and the importance of our strong commitment to ethical values.

I am delighted to respond to his call by saying that CIMA is already embracing these challenges fully. As the institute's chief executive, Charles Tilley, writes in his column on page 65, economic stability depends on growth, trust and relevance. Much of the work to develop these three conditions in a sustainable way falls to chartered global management accountants.

The demand for accountants is outstripping the supply. Warren Allen asserts that we have a responsibility to be "extremely active in encouraging more people to join this wonderful profession". The recent launch of CIMA's 2015 syllabus and the consultation on our global management accounting principles demonstrate the institute's commitment to both bridging the employability gap and providing a framework of best practice. These developments will help to place finance professionals centre-stage in the advancement of business. Indeed, CGMA designation holders are already guiding 91 of the Fortune 100. As an increasing number of people see the value in studying for a professional qualification that is ever more finely tuned to meet the needs of business, this population is set to grow exponentially.

The World Conference of Accountants will take place on 10-13 November in Rome. Appropriately enough, its theme is "2020 vision: learning from the past, building the future". Under the CGMA banner, CIMA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants are the main sponsors of this event.
