RECENT PRESS REPORTS IN THE WEST (perhaps also in the Arab world) have made much of protests and demonstrations by women in Saudi Arabia over the issue of being allowed to drive a motor vehicle within the country.

The fact that women in Saudi Arabia are prevented from legally driving at home when, I believe, so many of them drive cars outside their homeland seems somewhat incongruous in the 21st century when women in other Arab states are piloting passenger jets.

At a time when Saudi Arabia seems so committed to moving forward and improving the situation of all its citizens--The Middle East regularly carries articles on these efforts--I would be interested to know the thinking behind the ban on women drivers. It would appear that such legislation preventing women from taking the wheel does not exists...
