Almost half of the world's biggest listed companies by market capitalisation are American in origin, new research has found.

The study, by PwC, has found that 47 of the world's 100 most valuable businesses are from the US, compared with 33 in 2008.

In the past five years the total market cap of the top 100 has increased by 79 per cent from $8.4trn to $15trn, while the entry threshold now stands at $81bn--more than 50 per cent higher than it was in 2009. Apple remains the most valuable company on the list, with a market cap of $469bn.
