Is watching The Apprentice a guilty pleasure? How about Dragons' Den or The Secret Millionaire? You need feel no more guilt as these shows are educational, apparently.

Research published this week by the UK Department of Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) reveals that these shows not only encourage viewers to become their own boss, but 40 per cent of the survey respondents said the programmes had shown them practical steps to start their own businesses.

BIS is not relying on the BBC or Channel 4 to provide business advice to SMEs in the UK, but it does envisage SMEs being mentored by more experienced business owners.
