The seemingly endless suggestions regarding mergers between accountancy bodies continues. The pattern appears to involve the ICAEW signalling interest, other bodies responding positively, then a consultative process, followed by a vote of all the institutes involved. The result is always that the originator of the idea, the ICAEW, votes against the proposal.

This is classic strategy. By showing a willingness to amalgamate and then having their approaches rejected, the other bodies create a public perception that they lack self-confidence and strength. ICAEW...
