I have had the honour and privilege of serving as president of the institute for the past year. My term has been set against a backdrop of unprecedented challenge and change for businesses and economies around the world. It is at times like this that the underlying values and strengths of our institute come to the fore. I am proud to say that in our 90th year the vision, innovation and leadership displayed by our founders has been demonstrated to me many times by members, students and staff in places I have visited across the globe.

In the 165 countries in which we operate, CIMA members share a forward-looking, dynamic and principled approach to change--it is in our DNA. A few examples of such developments in which I have been involved include: launching our new qualification (due to be examined for the first time in May next year); participating in the Prince of Wales's pioneering project "Accounting for sustainability"; launching the CIMA global business challenge for undergraduates (and attending a regional final in north-west China); presenting our "Leading in a downturn" guidance; and chairing high-profile debates on ethics in London and Malaysia. All these and many other activities help to emphasise the forward-looking and dynamic nature of our qualification

Many employers and educationalists have told me how much they value the CIMA qualification. Our innovative research programme, and the support it gives members in their continuing professional development, provides essential ingredients to help us guide businesses through the downturn and drive them towards a successful and sustainable future. The challenges of the downturn offer an ideal opportunity for members to demonstrate their value.

The institute and its members are not immune to recession. But in 2008 we pursued our strategy of extending opportunities for members by making the qualification even more portable by signing a new agreement with CPA Australia; updating existing agreements with the Society of Management Accountants of Canada and the Institute of...
