Senegal: time for revenge; now it is tit for tat, as Senegal throws out French illegal immigrants in retaliation for the humiliation suffered by Senegalese illegal immigrants in France. Paul Michaud reports from Paris.

Rarely does an African country go to great lengths to defend the trampled dignity of its people living abroad. But Senegal has had enough! After decades of watching its nationals humiliated in France, in the name of illegal immigration, Dakar has hit back by deporting French illegal immigrants in the country.

In March, Dakar sent officials to Paris to bring home in a more dignified manner", its so-called "Sans Papiers" (illegal immigrants) deported by France. The French interior ministry had been running "Afro-charters" on a weekly basis, carrying manacled Senegalese, Malian and Ivorian illegal immigrants home to the former French colonies.

Angry over the manner of the deportations, Dakar hit back by expelling French illegal immigrants from its soil. A spokesman of the Senegalese embassy in Paris, confirmed to New African that in mid-April, "more than 20" French citizens without proper tourist visas or whose visas had expired were summarily deported from Senegal, and placed on Air France flights to Paris.

Interestingly, the French did nor like it. Although a French foreign ministry official claimed he was "not aware" of the deportations, another French diplomatic source told New African that France was in the process of determining the number of its nationals currently living in Senegal without valid papers.
