The 2001 Human Development Report, published by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), says that the developing world is 'a source for optimism'. Citing evidence of vast improvements in life expectancy, nutrition, adult literacy, human rights and the fight against poverty, the report says too few people recognise the impressive gains made in the past 30 years. For the first time the UNDP now officially classifies more of the world as developed than underdeveloped.
