I was hired as the financial controller of the team at I Atkins, working on the $250m engineering design of the Dubai Metro which, at the time, was the biggest transport infrastructure project in the world in the shadows of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower. I arrived in Dubai in 2007, having previously been the financial controller of an operation in the water business group within Atkins in the UK.

Atkins was appointed as the lead designer responsible for all civil works associated with the red and green lines of the Dubai Metro. This included geotechnical and site investigations, bored tunnels, cut and cover tunnels, viaducts and bridges, underground stations and depots. Additional specialist services included fire and ventilation, environmental impact, concrete durability, noise and vibration reduction, and landscaping. Our role also included design coordination with the rail systems and working closely with the contractor to facilitate timely construction of the programme. In total, Atkins had an internal team of nearly 1,000 employees on the project, of which 200 worked full time.
