Survey to shape future of institute: CIMA's member research results have been 'very useful'.

Ethical issues and the reputation of the accountancy profession are two of the key concerns of CIMA members, according to a survey of the institute's membership.

In April, members were asked to help shape the future direction of the institute by taking part in detailed research. Nearly 8,000 people responded to a questionnaire that covered areas such as CPD, the CIMA website and institute publications including Financial Management.

In the light of the Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat accounting scandals, it was perhaps not surprising that well over 80 per cent of the respondents ranked the reputation of accountants as the issue of greatest importance for the future of the finance profession. Alongside this, members said they were also concerned about budgeting (82 per cent), the role of the finance function (81 per cent) and performance management and reporting (81 per cent).

In relation to areas of importance outside the finance function, ethics came in first place (84 per cent), followed by information technology and communication skills (both 79 percent).
