Legislation against age discrimination in employment was enacted in the UK three years ago, but employers' attitudes have yet to catch up with the law. Statements such as "employers generally don't want to hire people aged over 50" don't seem to shock us as much as they should. (Replace "aged over 50" with, say, "from ethnic minorities" and see how uncomfortable you feel saying that out loud.) But in my experience such observations are still voiced widely. This tells me that employers--and, as a result, most of the recruitment industry--are still practising age discrimination.
