To help offset the loss of oil reserves to newly independent South Sudan, Sudan will end fuel subsidies. Sudan has lost around 75% of its 500,000 barrels a day oil production. The loss of oil revenues has cut the inflow of hard currency. South Sudan exports its oil via the northern Red Sea port of Port Sudan because it has no port or refineries.
