Student accountants prefer CIMA--and work-life balance.

The CIMA qualification is the most popular route into a career in finance in the UK, according to a new survey. The review of salaries and workplace developments by recruitment specialist Robert Half Finance & Accounting covered more than 2,100 finance professionals. It found that 30 per cent of part-qualified respondents were CIMA students, compared with 22 per cent studying with ACCA and 16 per cent with the AAT.

Backing up other recent findings, the survey confirmed that the main job criteria for students and newly qualified accountants was a good work-life balance. "This is a new development," said Steve Carter, managing director of Robert Half Finance & Accounting. "There is a feeding frenzy for part-qualifieds and newly qualifieds after the downturn, and they know what they're worth. In a sense, they are biting back and pushing for the best packages."
