Southern Africa's HIV/Aids epidemic "is still moving with terrible velocity" with some 5.5m people infected with the disease in South Africa alone, according to Mark Stirling, regional director for UNAIDS, the United Nations agency.

Citing only Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe where HIV/Aids prevalence is declining, Stirling maintains that there is a lack of political will to prioritise the disease in sub-Saharan Africa.
