A steadfast focus on adaptability and quality has helped CIMA to reach the ripe old age of 90.

Next month CIMA will be holding a commemorative service that will form the centrepiece of celebrations to mark the institute's 90th anniversary. Looking through the archives, it's clear that CIMA was founded in circumstances remarkably similar to our own. In 1919 the business world was experiencing rapid change--in this case, the introduction of mass production methods pioneered by Henry Ford--and hard economic times were looming.

For the fledgling Institute of Cost and Works Accountants, as CIMA was first known, it must have been a fascinating time to promote the skills of a new type of finance professional: a manager who combined the cost knowledge that had traditionally been ascribed to accountants with the technical grasp of various industries that had been the preserve of engineers.

Addressing the institute's first annual conference, Lord Weir of Eastwood, an industrialist and government minister, set the tone by stressing the need for greater efficiency: "In this campaign of revision of method, every problem, for its intelligent solution, is associated directly E with the work of your profession."

Many things may have changed over the intervening years, but, as the economy becomes increasingly unstable, it is more important than ever that businesses acknowledge the unique qualities of chartered management accountants and take advantage of their ability to help drive organisations of every size and sector through the challenging times ahead.

The institute was founded on the concept of quality rather than quantity, which is just as true today as it was in 1919. The rigorous exam process ensures that CIMA's membership comprises the most talented and the most skilled professionals. The recent launch of the new syllabus also demonstrates our determination to provide a qualification that continues to meet the needs of modern businesses.
