South Africa has been ranked third, after China and Brazil, in a new country-by-country assessment of 55 renewable-energy markets in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, which includes 19 African nations.

The Climatescope 2014 report shows that emerging markets are installing renewable energy projects at almost twice the rate of developed nations, a combined 142GW from 2008 to 2013. Their 143% growth in renewables compares with 84% in wealthier nations, with 213MW.

China, Brazil, South Africa, India, Chile, Uruguay, Kenya (7th), Mexico, Indonesia and Uganda are ranked in the top ten, with South Africa ahead with $10bn worth of clean energy investment in the last two years.
