Merger and acquisition activity has reached a 10-year low in the UK, despite a marked increase in inward investment. The average quarterly value of mergers and acquisitions by British companies so far in 2003 is 3.3 billion [pounds sterling], just over half of that in 2002 (6.3 billion [pounds sterling]), according to the Office for National Statistics. This compares with an average quarterly value of 7.25 billion [pounds sterling] in 2001 and 26.7 billion [pounds sterling] in 2000.
