A CIMA forum has warned that a failure by higher education experts to recognise the value of practical research could widen the gap between academia and business even further.

The forum was responding to a consultation paper published by the Higher Education Funding Council, which is responsible for reviewing academic research funding in the UK. The council is considering the criteria and working methods for the 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE), which will gauge the quality of research and help the four higher education funding bodies decide how to allocate 10bn [pounds sterling] of research funds. CIMA is contributing as a major donor of business-based research.
