The Dispatches TV programme on Channel 4 on February 9 illustrated how British recruiters discriminate against older applicants. In the programme, Martin Uoyd-Penney FCA (56) said that recruiters often "lost" his CV, while his unqualified daughter received lots of interest from the same firms. Ageist employment practices have been made illegal in the UK, but that doesn't stop companies from pursuing them.

What is galling for older accountants is that their membership bodies don't seem to care. Adverts seeking "newly qualified", "ambitious" and "energetic" people are really saying: "Only young accountants need apply." Who is responsible for enforcing the law on ageism in recruitment?
