It's time to rejoice in reaching a great milestone, but the institute will never rest on its journey.

We begin the institute's official 90th anniversary celebrations around the world this month with two major events in London: a service of thanksgiving at the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields on March 26 (see page 61 for further information), followed later in the day by the CIMA Anthony Howitt lecture.

Over the coming months members and students from among the 165 countries in which CIMA operates will be celebrating this important milestone at annual dinners, AGMs and other key events. I am delighted that I shall have the honour of attending several of these during my imminent round of visits to promote the institute across East Asia and Australia.

The title of the CIMA Anthony Howitt lecture is "Megaprojects: the New Deal for a global recession?". Its theme could not be more timely in representing the scale and importance of the skills of management accountants to achieve success for their organisations.

The Anthony Howitt Trust was set up to broaden the profile of our profession to a wider group of people through a biennial lecture. It is particularly fitting for ClMA's 90th anniversary that

Professor Bent Flyvbjerg, a world-renowned expert on megaprojects, will deliver this prestigious and topical address to an influential audience including representatives of other professional and kindred bodies.

As the US government and other administrations invest billions of dollars of taxpayers' money into new infrastructure in a bid to save the global economy from a depression, it is vital that we publicise the lessons learned on some of the huge projects that have been undertaken over the past few decades. Investing in infrastructure may be a good thing but, if good money is thrown after bad or spent on the wrong projects, we might be better off not spending in this way at all.
