Since the mid-1980s Qatar has been recognised as an emerging gas power within the Middle East. Qatar's North Field is the world's largest known non-associated natural gas field. The offshore field, which lies at a depth of 15 -70 metres to the north-east of the Qatar peninsula, boasts total reserves estimated at 500 trillion cubic feet.

The most efficient methods of utilising these vast reserves and the scope this development offers will be among the major topics of discussion at a conference to be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Doha from 19-21 April 1998.
