Organisations in the public sector and their regulators should give sustainability a higher priority, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has advised.

Local authorities and central government departments are failing to keep up with the private-sector-led drive towards sustainability reporting, according to a discussion paper published by CIPFA.

The 1992 Earth summit recognised the key role of public bodies in promoting sustainability. But, more than a decade latch few UK councils have built sustainability into their reporting infrastructure and few government departments regularly issue sustainability reports, CIPFA claims. The institute hopes that its paper will stimulate debate on this issue.
