I refer to the informative article "Know your enemy" (November 2006), which described the role of profiling in preventing and detecting fraud. The value of this technique was highlighted recently with the discovery of massive losses incurred by Societe Generale because of the alleged activities of Jerome Kerviel. While the bank's 4bn [pounds sterling] loss mayor may not turn out to have been caused by fraudulent activity in the strict legal sense, it's clear that profiling could have been used in this case.
