European businesses could be missing out on potential profit increases totalling [euro] 46bn, due to inefficient methods used in processing information, according to a new report.

The Ricoh Process Efficiency Index showed that companies across Europe spend [euro] 147bn managing business-critical document processes each year, and concluded this could be cut by almost a third if more efficient systems were in place.

It found that European businesses overwhelmingly acknowledge there remains significant room for improvement in this area, with many telling researchers that document processes are unnecessarily labour-intensive and manual - and that 43 per cent of all business-critical document processes rely on hard copy data.
