I was disappointed that my name was not listed among those of the past presidents who attended the service of thanksgiving for the life of Vice-Admiral Sir George Vallings KCB at Guildford Cathedral (First in, April). I had the greatest regard and respect for Sir George Vallings and I attended the service to acknowledge both this and his significant contribution to CIMA.

I also owed him a personal debt of gratitude for his superb contribution to the president's dinner in 2005, my year of office. Following his acceptance of my invitation to the dinner, I further asked him if he would be kind enough to propose the toast to "the immortal memory", since we were dining on the eve of the 200th anniversary of the battle...
