A leading finance director in the National Health Service is calling for a stronger focus on risk management and commercial business skills in the health sector.

Speaking at a CIMA conference on NHS reform, Paul Kemp, director of finance at the Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Strategic Health Authority, said that recent structural changes meant that health service FDs would have to strengthen their interpersonal and business skills.

The introduction of patient choice, payment by results, practice-based commissioning and foundation trusts was arguably the most complex series of changes ever introduced in the NHS, Kemp told the conference.
