Electricity in South Africa might soon lose its distinction of being amongst the world's cheapest as demand on the ageing infrastructure forces Eskom, the state-owned power provider, to embark upon an expensive and extensive makeover.

The huge upgrade bill, conservatively estimated at R85bn ($14.2bn), will force Eskom to increase its tariffs to finance the programme.
