For the first column of the new presidential year it's appropriate to be thinking about leadership. Our vision is for CIMA members to be driving the world's most successful organisations. Among our membership we have an increasing number of such people.

Our passion for, and commitment to, leadership is threefold: as a world leader in the qualification and support of accountants in business; as a world leader in the development and promotion of the science of management accounting; and as an institute of over 150,000 members and students leading our own teams and organisations.

It's apt, therefore, that the recent CIMA global leaders summit in Sri Lanka should have had "Passion for perfection" as its theme. The conference attracted business leaders of a calibre that demonstrated Asia's contribution to global business. Among the speakers who have risen above their peers over the past decade to distinguish themselves were Malaysia's fourth prime minister, Mahathir Mohamed; Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (and the first and only Pakistan cricket captain to win a World Cup final); and Raj Rajaratnam, the founder of the Galleon Group, who has been described as an investment superstar in the US. Their unifying quality is a true passion for what they do, coupled with an ability to transform their goal of perfection into outstanding results.
