I do not believe that South Africa faces any sort of dilemma in its choice of building new power generation stations ('Eskom--between a rock and a hard place', African Business, May 2010 issue). It will have to go for coal-fired thermal generation for two or three interlinked reasons, no matter how loud the environmental protestors may shout. Firstly, South Africa is sitting on big deposits of coal; secondly, mining provides huge numbers of jobs; and thirdly, it is government that will make the final decision and they will need to take heed of the mining unions.
