Position:Around Africa - Benin - Mathieu Kerekou wins presidential race - Statistical Data Included

As we went to press, a second round of voting was due to be held in Benin's presidential election, after the first round had produced no winner. Mathieu Kerekou, the incumbent, won 47,06% of the votes while Nicephore Soglo who ruled the country between April 1991 and March 1996 (after beating Kerekou in the 1991 presidential race), won only 28,94%. The election was contested by 15 other candidates.
