I think that P A Talbot's letter ("Rigour fortis", July/August) perhaps missed the point about the Russell Group of top UK universities' non-acceptance of A-level subjects perceived as "soft", including accounting.

"Soft" is an unfortunate word to apply in this respect. I have no doubt that it is not the "softness" of the subject matter that is at issue here. It's more that the universities are seeking undergraduates with a more traditional broad school education. Indeed, it used to be the case, before the advent of open access...
