Scenes of pandemonium greeted the newly crowned Miss World 2001, 18 year old Agbeni Darego, when she returned to her homeland shortly after her stunning achievement. Thousands of supporters greeted her at Muhamed Murtala International Airport, delighted that 'The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria' had become the first Black African to win the coveted title.

The beauty contest, held this year in Sun City, South Africa, was watched by over an estimated billion strong global television audience. With the title she wins a $100,000 prize, but even more importantly, world-wide recognition and the chance to carve out a career as a super model or screen actress.

Agbeni hails from Abonnema, an island close to Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She is the daughter of a retired customs officer, Chief Darego, one of eight children.
