Most medium-sized businesses believe that they will survive the recession, according to the findings of a recent CIMA survey.

Most respondents were sure that the downturn would end in the next 12 to 24 months. Four out of five managers polled were confident that they would keep their jobs, while a similar proportion reckoned that their businesses would survive.

Despite this optimism, most said that their company turnover, net profits or sales turnover had fallen by more than ten per cent in the past year. A third also reported that overhead costs, supplier prices or basic salary packages had increased by up to five per cent. When asked about future challenges, they expressed most concern about falling customer demand (72 per cent), difficulties obtaining prompt payments (72 per cent) and barriers to expansion into new markets (67 per cent).
