A CIMA member is pioneering a project to teach South African schoolchildren basic financial and business skills. Jody Hollis FCMA, director of Winning Teams, developed the scheme, which is funded by Standard Bank and Postbank and is now being extended to all 600 state schools in Gauteng.

The programme, which targets 250,000 pupils at grades ten to 12, is run in collaboration with provincial education departments. Pilot projects are planned in KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Eastern Cape. It's intended to teach pupils how to perform tasks such as writing a CV, reading a pay slip and compiling a personal budget, as well as learning how to work in a team, listen actively and develop communication skills. They will also be taught about business ethics, including how to identify and tackle bribery and corruption.
