John Coghlan has spent his entire career in industry. He has worked in the engineering sector, motor assembly and, for the past 30 years, in packing for Jefferson Smurfit Group. He joined Smurfits as an accountant and was made a chief executive at 33, responsible for several operating companies. In 1990 he was appointed divisional chief executive before becoming country chief executive of Smurfit UK, which had 30 operating companies with 2,500 employees. In 1993 Clive Brownlee, at that time president of the Republic of Ireland division of CIMA, asked Coghlan to become actively involved in the institute. He is passionate about enhancing the reputation of the CIMA qualification and enjoys interacting with members in branches, divisions and council.
