In early April, President Daniel Arap Moi who steps down at the end of the year after 24 years in power, unveiled the four possible successors to his throne and yet managed to keep the country guessing who the successor would be. Addressing a big crowd at the sprawling Kariobangi shantytown on the outskirts of Nairobi, where ethnic clashes recently claimed 40 lives, Moi said any of the quartet -- Amolo Raila Odinga, leader of the National Development Party (NDP) who also holds the joint energy portfolio; Musalia Mudavadi, 42, minister for communications; Uhuru Kenyatta, 38, minister for local government and son of former President Jomo Kenyatta; and William Ruto, 38, an assistant minister -- could lead Kenya and steer the ship of state very well.

Moi, however, restrained his anointing hand and thus kept Kenyans guessing who their next president would be. Though the "chosen one" is still not known officially, Moi has been dropping...
