I remember when my teacher in a GCSE English class spent a fair bit of time trying to explain the meaning of the term "irony". Afterwards, I felt that the concept she'd just tried to explain had eluded me.

Many years later, the full meaning of the term hit home while I was reading the financial news this week. Building property maintenance firm Erinaceous has breached its banking covenants and the dealings of some of its senior directors are also under scrutiny. This comes on top of last year's investigation into one of its subsidiaries, Dunlop Hayward, where one of its surveyors was arrested in connection with an alleged 10m [pounds sterling]...
