A UN report says Africa grew by around 5.5% last year following an unprecedented 65% leap in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2004. According to the UN's World Economic Situation and Prospects Report, FDI in Africa climbed from $18bn to more than $30bn.

The report cautions, however, that even this strong performance might not be enough to meet the continent's Millennium Development Goals of halving poverty by 2015. But this should not detract from the fact that the increased levels of FDI are an important boost to increasing growth in Africa.
