An accounting department at Royal Dutch Shell has been named finance team of the year at the CIMA Financial Management Awards 2005. The 37-member team was commended at the annual gala dinner held at London's Waldorf Hilton hotel on December 1 for its outstanding professionalism and project management skills during a particularly difficult time for the company.

The 300-strong audience at the awards ceremony heard how the Shell group reporting department had committed itself to a year of night and weekend shifts in order to assist regulators' investigations after the company had restated its oil reserves and to prepare for the merger of Royal Dutch and Shell Transport & Trading. These tasks were in addition to separate projects aimed at ensuring compliance with IFRS, Sarbanes-Oxley and the new rules on the operating and financial review.

Commenting on the team's achievements, CIMA's judging panel said: "We were impressed with the leadership that maintained morale in a team operating in such stressful circumstances."

Finance teams at British American Tobacco Polska and Tesco were highly commended for their achievements in the same award category, which was sponsored by Marks Sattin. The award winners in the other categories were:

* Financial business leader of the year sponsored by FTC: Paula Downey, the Bromley by Bow Centre.

* Public-sector finance team of the year, sponsored by Insight: HM Revenue & Customs. Highly commended: the London Borough of Lambeth; the Metropolitan Police Service.

* International charitable development award: Dougal Freeman, Liverpool Associates in Tropical Health.

* Employer of the year, sponsored by Hays Accountancy & Finance: Citigroup. Highly commended: the National Health Service including the graduate schemes (part of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement); WNS Customer Solutions.
