CIMA is a success story. Chartered management accountants are leaders. We demonstrate our leadership in our approach to the profession and in our relationships with major stakeholders--most significantly, employers. We pride ourselves on looking to the past purely to use that information to help our organisations achieve success in the future. It is this approach to business that encourages us to become chartered management accountants.

However, as we move towards the end of this calendar year and look forward to the next one, it is timely to reflect on how members, students and staff have engaged with employers, colleges and other important stakeholders over the past 12 months with regard to the more social aspects of institute life. My visits this year in the UK, Ireland, Canada, Malaysia and Sri Lanka have given me a great appreciation of the leadership skills on display and the overall contribution made to the institute in the social arena to ensure its continuing success. I believe that it forms a significant part of the CIMA experience and, in turn, increases the value of our brand worldwide.

The most successful social events require a great deal of detailed organisation. They also reflect the values of the organisers. All of the CIMA events I have attended during 2005 have been a wonderful demonstration of the institute's values in action, with customer focus, innovation and professionalism at their core.
