"I started studying for the CIMA qualification in the early nineties. I then took a break to work in Jamaica, before returning to complete the final year of my studies in 1998.

I've been at Murray & Roberts for six years. As finance and commercial director for Middle East operations I'm in charge of the financial side of all of our projects in the region. This includes the statutory, banking, treasury and company secretarial sides of things and, most importantly, project budgeting and forecasting.

The word "commercial" was added to my job title around nine months ago, which means that I now oversee all contract and commercial surveying activities, as well as finance. This has been quite challenging because these were not historically my core areas of expertise. My CIMA qualification has helped because it is practical and broad based, unlike other accountancy qualifications. This is useful when you get into business...
