Healthcare boosts operations.

With the NHS in the doldrums, and regular stories in the media about patients dying on hospital trolleys while waiting for treatment, private healthcare has become a key recruitment and retention tool among organisations. Over 4.8 [pounds sterling] million employees in the UK receive private health insurance paid for by their employer and this is set to increase, according to a survey by consultancy William M Mercer.

Four out of l0 firms that provide medical insurance offer it to all their employees, not just managers and senior people. And in the past three years, 70 per cent of employers who have changed eligibility conditions have extended membership.

"By extending cover to all employees, organisations appreciate the productivity benefits of speeding up medical treatment and getting employees back to work more quickly" says Steve Clements, the firm's European partner.

But half of the firms that offer medical insurance do not extend this to staff family members, although this would be an obvious attraction for employees. And, of those who are offered cover, just 75 per cent of full-time and almost 60 per cent...
