Aid agencies working in Sudan are being urged to strengthen their financial management by learning from the experiences of previous campaigns. Alex Jacobs ACMA, director of Management Accounting for Non-Governmental Organisations (Mango), has compiled a list of key issues drawn from past relief efforts in southern Africa and India. This list has already been studied by some of the main charities working to support one million displaced Sudanese people.

An evaluation of aid agencies' performance over the past four years by the UK-based Disasters Emergency Committee has found that financial control has generally been maintained to a high standard, but that the agencies must still improve their overall accountability to donors and beneficiaries alike. One evaluation noted that many agency reports "did not provide a transparent account of their activities".
