Firms urged to protect their data 'crown jewels'.

Anew report on IT security by the Institute of Risk Management has highlighted the need for organisations to safeguard their most crucial data from theft more effectively.

The institute, which has provided guidance to risk managers for more than 25 years, says it's crucial that organisations know what information constitutes their "crown jewels" - be it customer details, credit card data or intellectual property - and have a clear understanding of its value.

Its report, "Cyber risk", concludes that, with the right approaches, organisations can manage the risks using simple controls, eradicate most threats and make cyber-crimes harder to commit.
