A leading European accountancy body is calling for the independent monitoring of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports.

In a recently published paper, the Federation des Experts Comptables Europeens (FEE) has warned that the reporting of a business's combined economic, social and environmental impact will not be credible unless it is verified by independent assessors.

The global drive towards voluntary CSR reporting was reinforced at the world summit on sustainable development in South Africa two years ago. But the FEE is now pressing the European Union's CSR forum to recognise that urgent action is needed to introduce independent audits if such reporting is to be valued by investors.
