The new year could not have got off to a better start. I am writing this article 30,000ft above the ground as I fly back from a heartwarming trip to India. As a son of this vibrant region, I am not ashamed to admit that I soaked up the warmth of the Asian sunshine and the CIMA members and staff I met on my visit. This experience was made even more special by the fact that I was able to celebrate the first anniversary of CIMA's joint venture with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) in my country of origin.

The Indian subcontinent was a very fitting location for such a celebration. Why? Because there are strong synergies between the outlook in this emerging economy and that of the institute. Both have a strong tradition and culture. But, at the same time, both have a global vision that is firmly fixed on looking forward and harnessing innovation, dedication and professionalism to achieve long-term, sustainable success.

CIMA's vision has been greatly enhanced by its work with the AICPA. The aim of the joint venture was to create the world's first globally recognised management accounting designation--the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). From the outset, our research indicated that there is a strong demand for finance professionals with both a world-class qualification and a global business perspective.

The take-up from AICPA members reflects this demand. Following the launch of the joint venture, we set a target for 35,700 AICPA members in business and industry to adopt the CGMA designation by July 2013. This target was, in fact, exceeded last October and, with a current total of 37,350, we are optimistic for the future development of management accounting in the Americas. This demand was reinforced by the recent confirmation that CIMA now has a student or member presence in all of the top 100 global brands listed by the world's largest brand consultancy, Interbrand.
