Liberia's ex-President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has won the $5m Mo Ibrahim award for "exceptional and transformative leadership".
The award was founded by Sudanese telecommunications tycoon Mo Ibrahim and is designed to improve the quality of African leadership.
The award has been withheld on six occasions since its creation in 2007 due to lack of eligible leadership.
Yet Liberia, the foundation said, was the only country to improve in every category and sub-category of the Ibrahim Index ofAfrican Governance.
