In a case decided before implementation of the Adoption and Children Act 2002, Hedley J in the Family Division directed the local authority to give notice to the father of the mother's request for the child to be placed for adoption, but invited them also to use the wardship jurisdiction to provide some protection to the mother from pressure by the father and his family, and her own parents. Re C (Adoption: disclosure to father) [2006] 2 FLR 589. In this case the facts clearly established the existence of a family life between the mother, father and baby (the father was also the father of four of the mother's other children), and there were no sufficiently compelling reasons to justify nondisclosure to the father, despite some history of violence on his part.
